Living History

Living History is a piece that speaks to the intertwining of the past and present, reflecting on the history that predates me and the history I have lived through. This work is deeply rooted in African American culture and is crafted entirely from hair, felt, and found objects that serve as powerful symbols of that heritage. Elements such as okra, cotton, and tobacco leaves are woven into the piece, each carrying layers of meaning tied to African American history and experience. These materials evoke stories of resilience, labor, and cultural identity, reminding us of the struggles endured and the progress made. This work is intentionally unfinished, with empty spaces left to be filled by additional symbols that will further enrich its narrative. These gaps reflect the ongoing journey of history and the layers yet to be acknowledged or understood. Living History is a bold statement about how far we’ve come and a reminder that the changes we see today are relatively recent.
