Blocks of Identity

Blocks of Identity

Blocks of Identity is an interactive storytelling and sculpture workshop that invites students to explore identity through material, memory, and personal symbolism. Using cube shaped blocks as storytelling structures, participants reflect on the many layers of who they are past, present, and becoming. Each side of the block represents a different stage, influence, or aspect of identity. Students use drawing, writing, texture, and mixed materials including fabric, paper, and hair inspired elements to build visual narratives that honor personal growth and cultural connection. Rooted in themes of Black History and Women’s History, this workshop encourages students to recognize how identity is shaped by family, community, resilience, and self expression. Through making, reflecting, and sharing, participants learn that their stories are layered, powerful, and worthy of being seen. By the end of the session, each student will create a sculptural storytelling block that serves as a tangible reminder of their voice, journey, and evolving identity

Learn to Cornrow

Learn to Cornrow

Learn to Cornrow is an interactive and hands-on workshop that invites participants to explore hair as a medium of cultural expression, history, and creativity. Using braiding techniques, participants reflect on the artistry, tradition, and personal significance of cornrows across African and Diaspora communities.

Each braid represents more than a hairstyle—it carries stories, symbolism, and a connection to heritage. Participants practice cornrowing techniques, experiment with patterns, and create styles that honor both personal expression and cultural roots.

Rooted in themes of Black history and community, this workshop encourages participants to recognize hair as a form of identity, resilience, and storytelling. Through learning, practicing, and sharing, participants gain skills, confidence, and an appreciation for the rich traditions behind cornrows.

By the end of the session, each participant will leave with the knowledge and ability to create their own cornrow designs, connecting art, culture, and self-expression through the timeless practice of braiding.
